  Zoombinis are little blue guys and gals that inhabit a kingdom reminiscent of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, and ingeniously teach math principles using puzzles instead of numbers. In Zoombinis Mountain Rescue a group of Zoombinis gets trapped in a cave, and it's up to players to organize a search party that can withstand the logical travails of a journey through this perilous and quirky terrain. There are nine "obstacles" along the rescue route. Players cross a bridge of turtles by sorting Zoombini search party members by nose color, hairstyle, or other characteristics. Deducing (again, based on features) which Zoombini can snowboard down what path furthers the mission, as well. The search party is held up briefly in a cafeteria where it must use logic to wait on Norfs who drop oblique hints about what they want, or don't want, to order. Each game will stretch your child's ability to use forethought and analysis to assess a situation. Even the easiest of the three levels is designed to be challenging, so be prepared to help out along this creative and strenuous path.

  The genius of this Windows-only program is that it turns sophisticated mathematical concepts into engrossing activities. We played a game called Boolie Boggle endlessly. Boolies either smile or frown, and in this game, the object is to change frowns into smiles by bumping Boolies with pinballs. Pretty easy until you start getting chains of Boolies and chains of pinballs. Soon your mind is throbbing as you try to figure out what a sequence of three pinballs will do to two frowning Boolies. "Binary addition" sounds pretty intimidating, but that's exactly what Boolie Boggle is teaching. "Algebraic thinking" and "information-age math" are among the other things this program teaches--mercifully, it manages it with little creatures and 3-D mazes instead of formulas and numbers.

  As this journey unfolds, members of the search party drop off due to mismatched noses, wrong path choices, and other errors. Fortunately, there is a practice mode where kids can play the games without sacrificing their Zoombini friends. Puzzles change elements, so there's no way to "learn" a level then repeat it by rote. There is also a very thorough parent's guide, which is helpful for parents who have, er, forgotten about binary numbers. Zoombinis Mountain Rescue is a gentle, yet challenging, program that will probably even work its subtle magic on math-phobes. (Ages 8 and older) --Anne Erickson

Comment: The kids picked it up in no time (ages 9 & 6.) Me, I couldn't figure it out but at least they enjoyed it. However they beat it in one day.

Comment: My fault. I should not have purchased software produced in 2001 for a computer system built in 2007. Too many incompatibility issues. I will give this to someone who has a more compatible system than mine.

Comment: The game itself is great, however, at least on my pc (Windows XP with service pack 2, with an intel motherboard and intel on board video) Each time we want to use the game we have to go to start, run, type in dxdiag, go to the display tab and turn off direct draw. Then we can launch and play the game. That's a bit too much of a pain to use. It says it works on XP, but every machine I know of uses direct draw, so this is really more engineered for older versions of windows I think. This game should be updated so folks don't need to go through this hassle. Otherwise the game itself is great. If you don't mind going through these steps (and maybe if you are lucky you won't have to) buy it.

Comment: We Got this from a friend, it came highly rated, and it didn't disappoint. My 6-yr-old son loves this. It took him a little while to figure out some of the puzzles - it took ME a little while to figure out some of the puzzles - but is very playable and enjoyable. One caveat is there is a middle part of the game where you will play the same puzzles over and over and over again. If your child is easily bored - beware. However, my son doesn't seem to mind this - he just tries to get better and better at each of the little games.

There is a story about the Zoombinis so I would recommend you to buy
"The Logical journey" first as it is the first of the story. But,there is a problem. I have two computers, one is XP, and the other is Windows 98. When I tried to use this game and the "The logical journey" on my XP,it didn't work. But on the 98 one, it worked! So well, if you have a XP edition...
But,(here's another but !)XP users don't be disappointed. There is another software named "Island Odyessy" that you can use.
Otherwise, everything is ok. I would say it has been a lot of trouble keeping away from my computer when I have this software running. So be careful parents and everyone, because your child or you will be stuck to the computer and the parents WILL have to drag your child away from the computer. :) All of the software is games, but I think it will be good for the children AND adults because it keeps your hard brain become soft.
Also, it might improve slow minds too.(I myself am a very slow person.:)
