FYI: You don't have to read the first two books in series before reading this one. I actually read them so long ago, I don't even remember what happened in them.


"To the Brink" is the perfect title for this book. It's also the perfect description for Gerard's awesome work in writing it. She left nothing out, and in no way went light on any aspect of the romance or the suspense and action.

The romance:
When Ethan and Darcy fall in love, it is a beautiful and sweet story that makes you instantly want happiness for them both. As you watch Ethan's war trauma slowly unravel their first marriage to each other, you feel their pain and devastation as they both realize that it can't be saved. While apart, neither ever remarried. Neither could get over their love for one another. When they meet again, both are aware that the feelings are still very much alive. The question is whether there can be any hope for a future together. Darcy fears Ethan is still a slave to his emotional demons.

The Suspense and Action:
After 5 years of living apart, when Darcy's life is threatened she doesn't have to think twice about who to call for help. She knows Ethan will come for her. She knows he will tear the jungle apart to find her and save her from the terrorists who kidnapped her.

Within a day of receiving Darcy's message, Ethan and his personal team of former special ops and marines are on their way to save her. Ethan, his brothers Nolan and Dallas, and his best friend Manny made the trip without a pause. Although they have all been out of the service for a few years, they put their training back to work to save Darcy. Both the Filipino army and a radical terrorist group stand in their way. For Darcy's sake, Ethan will risk all. In loyalty to Ethan, the other three men won't hesitate to join in.


Great love scenes, tons of emotion, powerful action scenes and endless suspense kept me locked to this book. I couldn't put it down.

Summary: A fabulous, thrilling book!
Comment: I loved this book! The thrills in this fun, action packed story was extremely fast paced and so exciting! I couldn't put it down and I was completely engrossed in the current story between Ethan and Darcy and Dallas and Amy. I was even interested in the poor kid who was swept up into the life of terrorism. I can't remember his name but he helps to save the day and I wish him well in his fictional future. Also surprising, I was equally interested in Ethan and Darcy's flashbacks. Normally I am the type of person who would get impatient at this type of format but I just plowed through this book, soaking everything up like a sponge.

Ethan was a very well rounded and engaging character. His angst was completely believable and I felt for him very much. I completely sympathized with his inner turmoil and the breakdown in his and Darcy's marriage broke my heart. Darcy was also a very likable character and her despair during her kidnapping was very palpable and real.

The sex in this book mostly occurs during Ethan and Darcy's flashbacks and the retelling of the beginning stages of their romance was so wonderful and emotional. *sigh* Everything about this story was done so perfectly, especially the telling of Amy's captivity. There was no unnecessary fat in this story and everything was kept as trim as possible.

My first Cindy Gerard book was Show No Mercy, the first offering in her Black Ops series and there were a lot of things going on in that book that I had no clue about. In this book I had a lot of "Aha" moments so that probably added to my enjoyment, but regardless, I really recommend this book as a highly engaging and fast paced novel. Ethan and Darcy were flesh and blood characters that came alive for me and their backstory was heartbreaking and I'm so glad they pulled through. :)

Summary: Another good entry in the Bodyguard series
Comment: Another winner. Gerard does a great job of weaving past and present together in a way that moves the story forward and gives its main characters depth. Even though you know love will prevail in the end, the back story is good enough, dramatic enough, to keep your interest to the last page. Even better, this book introduced two characters, Dallas and Amy, I cannot wait to read about in a future book. I love when that happens!
